Hottel served in every leadership position from assistant platoon leader to group commander and then as commander of an Army agency. In each of these positions his units were cited for outstanding contributions such as the Hawk Air Defense Missile Battery receiving the best Operational record of 58 such units in the Army in 1963.

He served in staff positions as personnel officer, adjutant, operations officer, training officer, intelligence officer and public information officer.

In the field of training, he served as an instructor for major commands and Army service schools. His instructional units and procedures were instrumental in providing increased instruction with fewer costs. He was selected as command briefer in many assignments including Headquarters, United States Army, Vietnam and Military Assistance Command, Vietnam. He was one of four briefers chosen to present the Army to congress under Secretary "Bo" Callaway.

As an intelligence officer, Hottel served in tactical, strategic, and operational assignments. He was chosen as the expert on the airborne sensor programs to represent the Army to the National Academy of Science.

In operational intelligence, he served as a collector in the various disciplines as well as a protector through counter-intelligence and special intelligence programs. For the majority of his service as a colonel, he served as the commander of units engaged in the production of all-source intelligence providing indications and warning of the imminence of war as well as special studies upon which operational plans were made and equipment designed. As terrorism increased, his units pioneered the use of intelligence to protect senior officials from terrorist attacks.

As a combat intelligence officer, Hottel provided raw intelligence from various collection systems and conducted operations which pinpointed enemy supplies, equipment and ambush sites.

Colonel Hottel served in riot control, mobilization, civil defense, and special programs such as the "Sky Marshall" security program.
