WORK? Work gets a bad rap in our world. There is something worse than work, and that's boredom. Dr. Kathryn Rost and Dr. G. Richard Smith of the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences have conducted a study on the mental health of heart attack survivors. Having a heart attack is not only a severe physical shock, but also a psychological and emotional shock. Survivors often develop some degree of depression. One thing that the doctors found which greatly reduced the chances of depression was going back to work. Of the men who returned to work, only 9% showed any depression a year later. Of the men who didn't go to work, 52% suffered from deep depression a year later. (American Health) Thank God if you have to get up every morning and go to work. But there's that word "work." Not a pretty word. A four-letter word. Do you realize that if you spend just eight hours a day, five days a week working at your job, in thirty-five years you will have spent 68,600 hours of your life at work (and that's taking three weeks off for vacation)! That's 8,575 days at work. And if you take any work home with yo...well, the mind just boggles, doesn't it? I've presented you with all these vital and stimulating facts to make you aware of how big a role work plays in our life. Now, let's ponder the unthinkable...what if your work is--dare I dream it?--boring? Heaven help us! Is your job stressful? Is it plagued by a lack of: -creativity -inspiration -fun? Well, is it? Never fear. Humor Man is here! It's a bird! It's a plane! No! It's Humor Man! Faster than the office grapevine, stronger than your secretary's coffee, able to leap your own narrow thinking in a single bound! Hooray! Why is humor an important factor in your daily work? Humor is a wonderful way to inspire creative thinking. Taking a serious situation and seeing it in a new light helps you to break out of old ways of thinking. It opens you up to a whole new perspective. Humor clears your mind of the dust bunnies of stultifying, serious thought that dominate most business atmospheres. You can use humor to inspire you to more creative problem-solving. Pastor Hottel
