USING GOD

Up ] Take His Hand ] Memo ] Nags Head ] Funeral ] [ Using God ] Seven Ups ] Work ] Happiness ]

Henry Blackaby, author of Experiencing God, writes "Some churches inadvertently use God to make them successful for God. They usually give all the credit to the people, but none to God for His work. Jesus took three and a half years to take the disciples out of this world and into the kingdom of God. The world says affirm self; the kingdom says to deny self. The world says make it easy; the kingdom says pick up the cross. I think God is trying to move us away from the superstars who get all the awards. We have lost the sense of awe of God because we have given men the credit. Our generation has lost of the sense of awe because we use the best methods of men, not God."

In another article, taken from the book "Freedom of Simplicity" the Quaker, Richard J. Foster, calls Christians to be more direct and concrete about the matter of obedience and self-denial. Words like self- fulfillment and self-actualization are more popular, and we have failed to see the amazing paradox that true self-fulfillment comes only through self-denial. (See Mark 8:34 and Matt. 10:39). We lose ourselves in a vision of the Holy. "We are catapulted into something infinitely larger and more real than our petty existence. A blazing God-consciousness frees us from self- consciousness. It is freedom. It is joy. It is life."

Are we using God or serving Him?
